...uncovered internal bad connection on a new transformer
Company: US North-West utility
Ratings: 45 MVA power transformer
Manufacturer: Confidential
A customer was commissioning a new 45 MVA power transformer delivered by an overseas manufacturer. During the test, ADWEL's Digital Winding Resistance ReporteR, DWR-10, was consistently issuing a warning of current interruptions, and did not complete the test. Another DWR-10 instrument was used with similar outcome. All other standard measurements, including TTR, Tan-Delta and insulation resistance indicated acceptable resistance value.
Nevertheless, the customer drained the oil and inspected the transformer to detect that the windings on all 3 phases were not properly secured to the bushings. Had the transformer been energized, a catastrophic failure could have occurred.
The HVA-40/10 model has been designed specifically for testing vacuum interrupters in accordance with ANSI / IEEE C37.60. The test set provides up to 40 kV with respect to ground, at test currents up to 10 mA.
The test voltage is smoothly adjustable over the full range and is accurately monitored at the output of the high voltage transformer. A milliammeter indicates the leakage current.
A large HV-ON lamp and a complete set of status indicators give the operator full control of the test set and the item under test.
A high speed solid state cut-out disconnects the voltage on breakdown or flash-over and actuates the red “failure” indicator. The HVA-40/10 instrument is equipped with a “dead-man” safety switch requiring two hand operation of the instrument. A “zero-start” interlock prevents the application of high test voltage on start-up. The test can also be used for many applications where AC dielectric testing is required such as: Switchgear, insulators, wire & cable, oil, rubber-gloves and many more.
