...uncovered internal bad connection on a new transformer
Company: US North-West utility
Ratings: 45 MVA power transformer
Manufacturer: Confidential
A customer was commissioning a new 45 MVA power transformer delivered by an overseas manufacturer. During the test, ADWEL's Digital Winding Resistance ReporteR, DWR-10, was consistently issuing a warning of current interruptions, and did not complete the test. Another DWR-10 instrument was used with similar outcome. All other standard measurements, including TTR, Tan-Delta and insulation resistance indicated acceptable resistance value.
Nevertheless, the customer drained the oil and inspected the transformer to detect that the windings on all 3 phases were not properly secured to the bushings. Had the transformer been energized, a catastrophic failure could have occurred.
The DWR ReporteR instrument can rapidly saturate the largest transformers and measure resistance with high accuracy and resolution. More than 240 measurements can be saved in each of 100 files for future reference along with transformer nameplate data. Results can be printed out by the 40-character-wide built-in printer, or easily transferred to a PC via RS-232 and USB ports.
The DWR ReporteR instrument features 4-1/2-digit resolution and 0.25% accuracy for precise measurement of winding resistance. Input channels have sophisticated sigma-delta A/D converters and notch filters to eliminate the effects of substation noise. The DWR is water proof, rugged and reliable.
A “Tap-changer” mode to automatically send a command to the transformer tap-changer to raise or lower the tap while saving each result in memory.
This model features a “Timed” mode to automatically record resistance and time as the transformer cools down after a “heat run”.
Once the test results are transferred to a PC, they are managed by ReporteR Database that allows files to be filtered and sorted. The DCT ReporteR Software generates reports using a standard test form. The reports are compatible with Windows MS Word and Excel.
